5 Things NOT To Do When Your Washer And Dryer Aren't Working

Blog

Many homeowners dread the moment they'll try to turn on an appliance only to be met with no response or an odd reaction. Such worries are understandable because these issues can cause a lot of inconveniences and could also mean a hefty repair bill is headed in your direction.

However, while you're worrying about what you should do in such situations, it's also important to note that there are certain things you shouldn't do. Know what not to do can save you money and keep you safe.

Not Eliminating the Smaller Issues

The first thing a homeowner should do when their washer and dryer aren't working is to eliminate the simpler causes first. It's not every day that a washer or dryer will simply fail to work. It's more likely that the problem was caused by something as simple as a tripped circuit breaker or a blown fuse.

You should familiarize yourself with the simple problems that affect home appliances so you can easily troubleshoot these issues when the opportunity arises. This will save you from a pointless repair bill.

Performing Major DIY Repairs

Once you've eliminated the simple issues, the next step should be to call a washer repair expert to take a look at your appliance. This is not the time to figure out if you can take on the more significant problems that can sometimes affect washer and dryers. It may seem cheaper to try and solve the major washer/dryer issues on your own; however, this could result in serious damage to the equipment or unsafe repairs.

Hiring an Inexperienced/Unlicensed Professional

Just as you shouldn't perform major repairs on your own, you shouldn't leave the job to someone unlicensed or without proper experience. They could easily make things worse, and holding them accountable could prove to be an issue.

Voiding the Warranty

If the warranty period hasn't yet elapsed, you should always avoid doing anything that could end up voiding the warranty. A warranty could erase the entire cost of any repairs, and you could easily void yours by removing the wrong screw from your washer or dryer.

Postponing Repairs

There's rarely a convenient time to get repairs done. Usually, the best option is to have the repairs done as quickly as possible. A damaged washer or dryer brings with it a lot of inconveniences, but it could also be unsafe to have such an appliance in the home.

Too Many Appliances Are Needlessly Discarded Today

My father worked as an appliance repair technician. I was always fascinated by his job, and I learned a lot just listening to him talk about his days at work with my mother. While he retired years ago, and I decided to not to follow in his footsteps in my career choice, I am still fascinated by how appliances work and especially how they have changed over the years. However, I have noticed one trend I don't like, and that is that too many appliances are thrown out when all they need is simple, quick fixes. I don't think that today's generation really knows when appliances can be fixed instead of replaced and how much money they are throwing away by not knowing! I decided to create a blog to share my tips with everyone, and I hope I can play a part in teaching young people today about appliances.
